Meh.

Got a little bit of buzz around this film, but otherwise no idea what it would be. I also didn't really know the Safdie brothers yet, so it was handy that it could be seen on Netflix. Although in hindsight it shouldn't really have been necessary, because I don't immediately see the special thing about this film.

Except maybe another 80s synth soundtrack, but you would think we've heard that enough by now, right? Gone are the days when that was retro hip. And the timid attempt to revive 90s music (with Gigi d'Agostino) has got to be about the worst choice ever.

Also very busy. Characters shout a lot (the typical Jewish/NY atmosphere) and the camera runs after everything, but not in such a way that it also looks nice. That is of course not so easy, but there are plenty of examples where this has already been done much better.

Wast rest is a film about an annoying character, one where of course everything always goes wrong (or actually someone who constantly ruins it for himself), that didn't immediately feel very fresh or surprising, including the ending. Sandler isn't great either, way too predictable and cliché. Just like the rest of the cast, really.

Due to the speed and crowds, it was still fairly dynamic, but half an hour could have easily gone by and some fresh ideas would have done this film really well. Now it is mainly a mishmash of old-fashioned things that are sold as glitz. Bit too average.

2.0*

What a roller coaster this movie is! Heard a lot and knew that Adam Sandler was good in this movie. I'm not usually a fan of his but wanted to give this a try. I was a bit apprehensive about the long playing time, but I didn't notice that after turning it on... Really amazing how the stress is transferred, I was constantly on the edge of my seat. And what an ending. Very good. 4*

I still have a few contenders to go this year, but I can well imagine that this will be the film of the year for many. Great crime/drama centered on a tragic character (with all due credit to a genius Sandler), a purposefully intense soundtrack and cinematography that make it a great trip; the film is rock solid. Although I also had to take a relaxing tea break after about an hour to keep the blood pressure under control, because the adrenaline that this releases is unprecedented.

This is in many ways better than Scorcese as far as I'm concerned, with so many more balls made, and with, bizarre as it may sound, an ending that is exactly what it was supposed to be. It's layered, the characters seem to have roles that might be considered cliché in crime movies, but the dynamics of the film are one that makes everything fall into place. (I mainly go along with Basto's analysis about the diamond, the pressure from all sides etc. - which also had its effect on Sandler's eventual killer after times in that glass passage.) And a wonderful role by the wonderful Julia Fox.

It's a shame I didn't get to see it in the cinema, but I'd still like to see it for a second viewing. Although then it will be harder to take a break...
