hit and miss.

On the plus side, the visuals are beautiful and perfectly 50's style, the playing is beautiful - although John Milton does have a point where he says it doesn't come across as natural. But that might still fit the character.

But there is something to that. The story is muddled and unclear - very little is known about the main character and his motives. It seems that the translation from the book to film didn't quite work out - not that I've read the book, but the Wikipedia summary does give some clues.

The violence - which was quite something to do, and certainly in somewhat puritan America - is not wrong in itself, but it can hardly shock me. I think there are worse movies. The only thing that is a bit bad to digest is the lack of cause, it's not a bad guy getting beat up but a pretty innocent beautiful girl. Well. If a film has to rely on that, what a poverty.

And the bouncer is very disappointing. Such bad effects, after you have seen a whole movie beautiful images. That really doesn't leave a good impression.

Winterbottom goes a bit wrong when it comes to the tension arc. By diving into the story at full speed at the beginning and through the somewhat jumping timeline, there is no sympathy for the character of Affleck. The same Affleck also plays very strong as we are used to from him.

Because of the construction of the film, nothing really hits hard, even the hard scenes suddenly feel out of place. The film is well shot and the decoration is also nothing to criticize, but the film can no longer be saved. The plot twist at the end also lacks effect and the cgi in the last scene is also very mediocre.

A little more could have been done here, I'm not familiar with Winterbottom's work and now I doubt to see more of his work.

Well.

First Winterbottom, and I have to say, I don't think he is a proponent of feminism. A lot of hard violence against female characters and that came to me all the time. The film is also quite slow but interesting.

Affleck acts very well, radiates a lot and often comes across as believable. Alba and Hudson are a bit behind, but don't play below par. The rest had few interesting dialogues to really convince.

Fairly slow film that doesn't always captivate, but fortunately does fascinate a large part of the film. Sometimes I had to drag myself through it. The hard scenes do stand out, I rarely see such an unpleasant scene in a film, and it is also portrayed hard.

Reasonable film, which is perhaps still too long and has a bit of a disappointing finale, but is not a very bad film.
