I don't think it's a super exciting movie, but it's definitely a movie that just looks good. The dialogues are well put together and never boring. The whole atmosphere is very strong and remains constant. What I do find striking is that I am normally quite impressed by del Toro, but I don't normally find Phillipe at all. In this film I think del Toro comes across as mediocre and I think Phillipe comes across as very strong in his character. I've never seen him play such a role, but he's doing well.

The point that intrigued me the most was whether or not the two could run off with the money and how they would achieve it. Would they help the mother keep her son or turn out to be cold-blooded killers after all? This question certainly made the movie interesting for me. If they are shot in the end you don't actually have an answer to your question yet, but I think that is strong.

A gamble at the thrift store, especially because of the excellent cast. But it doesn't want to be really special despite a number of nice elements.

The synopsis may be familiar with the two crooks, the job and the woman they eventually kidnap. A fairly extensive web of all kinds of stakeholders is emerging who all want to have a finger in the pie or outsmart all the other parties and somehow it reminds me of films like Snatch and Lock Stock. The cast can of course be there and the bit of violence is also fine.

But otherwise The Way Of The Gun is quite tension-free. In that sense, the characters don't really want to be interesting and the humor rarely really catches on. Don't get me wrong that I don't really think The Way Of The Gun is a very bad film, but it isn't all that special either and Del Toro and Phillippe make the best of it as a duo. Therefore as a whole a small setback but not a big one for once.
