Culture crash.

Not a film for a large audience, apparently, because many negative reviews. Perhaps partly because of Damon's somewhat unusual role - no action but a lot of talk and labor, and not exactly a very sympathetic role he plays either. Just like the other characters that populate the film actually, it's a bunch of people I'd rather not have in my circle of acquaintances, I think.

But that doesn't change the fact that much of the story is very well done on a micro level, and the interaction between the crass American and the French is just genius at times - although you may have to be fairly fluent in both languages to get there. to pick up on the subtleties. Perhaps especially interesting as a social drama - I certainly don't see the often-mentioned link with the Amanda Knox case, if only because it takes place in another country and I don't think Knox's father played any role either.

Very well acted, actually by all the roles, but besides Damon I also thought Cottin was very good. It's also very nice that she is oversimplified French in all manners and behaviors - well you would think 'yes, but she is also French', but in films that often goes wrong by itself. The whole atmosphere of Marseille has also been hit pretty sharply.

It's a pity that there are a few stitches at the end, I found part of the last half hour just a bit too easy. That could have been a bit better perhaps - but, perhaps that the focus of the direction was not on that, and the atmosphere was just a bit run down.

Good film, the screenplay rattles on all sides, does not alter the fact that Matt Damon plays a very convincing role.

The cultural differences are emphasized, which sometimes seems a bit forced.

I thought the daughter came out a little less well.

I immediately feel like going to Marseille, a beautiful city by the sea!

Wonderfully peaceful movie. And also wonderfully layered. A lot of depth. Pace is not high in this film. This gives the space to explore all kinds of layers in the interpersonal relationships of the main characters. Not only with dialogues, but sometimes when nothing is said, with beautiful silent scenes. And yet tension. The story slowly exposes the theme with its motives and consequences. The plot is gripping Matt damom and Camille Cottin are both peerless in this film. Like the last scene in Stillwater with Matt's last line. Movie history!

People don't skip this movie!
