Kneecap plot

West Belfast, 2019. Fate brings together disillusioned music teacher JJ with self-proclaimed 'scum' Naoise and Liam Óg, changing the sound of Irish music forever. Under the name Kneecap, their band begins to shape the language to fit their harsh, anarchic, hedonistic lives. But to make their voices heard, the trio must overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians as the future of the Irish language explodes into the public arena - with them at the center.

I didn't know the band, but I found Kneecap particularly entertaining. It's a rather fictionalized biography about and with the Irish-language hip-hoppers Kneecap, and fortunately a biography that is also fun if you've never heard of the band before. Lots of drugs, lots of good jokes, and, how could it be otherwise in a film about Northern Ireland, more than a pinch of politics. Not all aspects work equally well, a few of the storylines were sometimes a bit on the lame side (e.g. the policewoman and her daughter Georgia), but most of it worked for me. It's been a while since I laughed so much in the cinema. You do have to pay attention every now and then to follow the Northern Irish accents without subtitles, but I'm definitely going to look up our Belfast friends on Spotify. This is really cool.

The film has been compared to Trainspotting and that seems justified in terms of the energy of the editing – which gives the film a constant pace and an explosive feel – and in terms of the young, constantly partying and drug-using 'low-lifes' and their eternal struggle against the authorities as heroes of the film. The subject, however, is the Irish language, which is in danger of dying out: the previous generation tried to preserve the Northern Irish identity by means of attacks against the British occupier, but these boys do so by means of rap in the Irish language, which is lyrically rebellious – the songs are mainly about rampant drug use – but not punishable and "every Irish word is a bullet". The story of the battle between the police and the Irish youth and ultimately the inevitable reconciliation between the Irish generations in their struggle against the loss of the Irish language and identity – the older generation saw drugs and hip hop as degenerating and undermining their nationalist cause but now sees that it keeps the struggle alive by being contemporary – is nothing special but provides the skeleton on which the action scenes can be pasted to bring it to life. This energetic comedy is never brilliant but is entertaining throughout.

Haha yes! This is definitely nice.

It's actually a genius concept. The raw hip hop style a la Public Enemy linked to the Irish revolution and in particular the important weapon of their own language.

Yes there is plenty of fun and nonsense but the underlying political urgency and rebelliousness really sets the right mood coupled with the music.

Musically I can't really say that they are the best rappers or anything (they remind me a bit of the old Osdorp Posse) but this will definitely do very well on the festival circuit next summer because of the pure energy.

Nice!
