Due to circumstances, London's top agent Nicholas Angel is transferred to the sleepy town of Sandford. There's nothing to do at all unlike the action in London and Angel finds it hard to adapt. Then he is also linked to the young and rather clumsy cop Danny Butterman. Just as he's about to give up, a series of mysterious incidents force Angel to spring into action, and he soon discovers that Sandford isn't quite as sleepy a town as he thought...

Certainly in the first hour Hot Fuzz is a dazzling edited parody of the action-comedy (sub) genre. Timed jokes from the writing hands of Wright and Pegg swap pennies with im-and explicit references to, well, pretty much the entire movie canon. In the second half, the parodying begins to work against the film. Especially towards the end Hot Fuzz loses a lot of its sharpness due to the high over the top content and the somewhat dragging playing time. Partly because of that just not 4*.

After Shaun of the Dead we saw this Hot Fuzz again, and that was a lot of fun! A dazzling action film/comedy with the fun duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Also nice to see Timothy Dalton aka James Bond shine again. Soon also rewatch The World's End and then this trilogy will be complete again.

There was a time when I thought Hot Fuzz was the least of the Cornetto trilogy, but that has now completely turned around. Not that Shaun of the Dead and The World's End have fallen in my estimation, quite the contrary. But I've fallen in love with the movie more and more after each review of Hot Fuzz. No matter how many times I see the film, I always see new things. This is mainly because the film is so strong and tight down to the smallest detail. Every line of dialogue, every cut, every extra; everything is controlled down to the last detail by the master. Incredibly clever how Wright has an appropriate punchline for every moment in the film. I am reminded of those comedies in which a maker lets his actors improvise and that often results in far too long, unfunny scenes. None of that, every second counts.
Besides the fact that we see a great master at work behind the camera, the film is also perfectly cast. Frost does what he does best, while in the trilogy Simon Pegg can mainly demonstrate his diversity as an actor; because he's the opposite of his characters from Shaun and The World's End. It's also wonderful to see how they removed the - often tiresome - love interest from the script, but gave the dialogues to Nick Frost's character. A brilliant find. There is also a range of wonderful supporting roles, from Broadbent to Bill Nighy, from Bill Bailey to Kevin Eldon. And every time I enjoy the unintelligible David Bradley and the equally unintelligible interpreter Karl Johnson. But of all those fantastic supporting roles, the top prize goes to Timothy Dalton with his delicious grin and hilarious comments. 'I'm a slasher! I must be stopped!'
Hot Fuzz, nothing less than a big, big, big masterpiece.
