Every time a smile appears on my face when Ed says his catchphrase: 'Welcome to Good Burger, home of the good burger. Can I take your order?' Lazy teenager Dexter Reed (Kenan Thompson) does not understand why good Ed (Kel Mitchell) depends his entire identity on this hamburger joint. But through Dexter's budding feelings for Monique (Shar Jackson), he learns to be more gentle with his strange colleague. Behind the poop and pee humor and hysterical slapstick, there is quite a sweet film about being different and accepting each other's peculiarities. I would even call 'Good Burger' (1997) progressive because of the (perhaps unintentional) way in which Ed's character fits someone on the autism spectrum. Without becoming a stereotypical cliché, but as a unique individual with her own unique view of the world.

There is no shame in making a film with an extremely childish design, but the approach of director Brian Robbins and his screenwriters is very lacking in ambition. It doesn't exactly help when Dan Schneider comes forward for a role and co-wrote the story, because then you immediately know that this was simply intended as a money grab and not so much as quality cinema. Ultimately, the film is colorfully designed and the pace is high, but the acting by Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson is so emotionless that there is little to laugh about. Both cast members suffer from a lack of expression and timing, which means that the wide arsenal of jokes almost always misses the mark. You have to like simple things like this and with some genres (horror and action for example) I can easily accept it, but with comedy you need more to get me to accept it.
