Fisherman's Friends plot

"Some Bands Can't Be Managed"

A cynical record executive is tricked during a bachelorette weekend in Cornwall: his colleagues convince him to sign the local sailor's choir. He accepts the challenge, but the fishermen are not easily convinced. Meanwhile, the man becomes more and more enamored with village life. Moreover, his eye falls on the daughter of one of the choir members.

If Mark Twain's adage "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction" still holds true, then the true story of a group of singers from a Cornish fishing village who, thanks to a record company executive [Daniel Mays] who was there for a stag weekend in 2010, became a sensation with their renditions of old sea shanties has been considerably modified. For those unfamiliar with the tale of 'Fisherman's Friends', the rendition of 'the national anthem' will probably come as a surprise. Otherwise, it is surprisingly formulaic and predictable. The chemistry between Mays and Tuppence Middleton is a plus and Chris Foggin brings the local colour to life in a respectful and enjoyable way, aided by a fine supporting cast led by standout David Hayman as the veteran of the singing group.

Maybe a bit predictable, but I really enjoyed the film. The beginning was a bit difficult because the friends of the main character are really annoying (and act very badly). But luckily everything in Cornwall makes up for it. I thought it was a great film to watch despite it being so cheesy. The music is beautiful and I am also very charmed by Tuppence Middleton.

3.5*

Good to have seen once. An entertaining story, nice British atmosphere and I also liked the music quite a bit. Good acting and clear image. I didn't find it very impressive, but quite nice. Sufficient, more than a 6. 3*
