Duck Soup, the Marx Brothers' most famous comedy, is a film with an anarchist and pacifist tenor. Groucho plays the dictatorial president of Freedonia who is at war with neighboring Sylvania. Harpo and Chico argue with both sides, to the madness of each.

The Marx Brothers in top form. Especially Groucho with his delicious one-liners is unforgettable and Chico is hardly inferior to him. There's no point in quoting all the hilarious scenes. The most striking have already been mentioned several times in the comments above. From the first time I saw the film I remembered the scene about the hotel room, introduced by the shoes and… the horseshoes in front of the door. Awesome!
Lightning fast slapstick, which in word and image goes over the top for an hour and never slows down. Don't look for logic, because it all makes no sense and makes no sense. That's what makes it so much fun. Absurdity as motto. Decades later, the Zucker brothers have come pretty close with a few films, but they haven't been able to match this one.

Reasonable film about a wealthy lady choosing a new head of state for a bankrupt country. Nice puns and some nice farcical scenes. The mirror scene was definitely the highlight. But despite the short running time and still a decent pace, it didn't really captivate me because of the story (something that was probably better appreciated at the time).

Looks most like an elongated absurd sketch. I'm a fan of absurd humor - Monty Python, etc. - but that doesn't make it a good film. The (creatively conceived) rudeness that Groucho spews, for example, are funny one-liners, but they stand in the way of empathy in the film and the characters because there is almost never a reason or consequence attached to it. The scenario is also really weird, and I think you need some beacons to ground the whole, which is missing here. Now it just shoots in all directions without further ado. The musical intermezzos should not have gone any further for me, but in the thirties that was apparently a must in many comedies.
The highlight of the film for me is the mirror scene, and with that I naturally join the rest of the pack here. Ultimately, I also admire the verbal creativity of Groucho's character, but the mayonnaise as a whole doesn't pack a punch, which I do expect from a good comedy. Because of the beautiful mirror scene, I still give a narrow pass, and I'm mild with that.
