Despite Nielsen and a few hilarious moments, this film is mostly very thin and bland. A disappointing end to a career that started very strong. Mediocre.

Watched this movie again yesterday that was especially "good" in my memories. In the 25 years that have passed, I have obviously seen better movies… but also worse. Personally, I think the average is a bit on the low side. Half a point higher is fine, but no more than that.

I used to enjoy watching Leslie Nielsen and as far as I'm concerned is the figurehead of this genre, even though he had more serious roles at the start of his career. Ironically enough, in this film, a chance to go over the top, he shows very little.

McNicol does it better then. I thought his metamorphosis from restrained lawyer to insane insect hunter at the breakfast table was a fine example of acting. His role is obviously not big enough to carry the film, Nielsen should have done that.

The other supporting characters (the ladies, Jonathan Harker and Dr Seward) were all quite ok by the way. However, the protagonist (van Helsing/Brooks) does not give in, so you get a remarkable film in which the supporting roles come out more prominently than the main roles, without really shining. Perhaps this is where the lasting appeal of this film lies for me?

Some things work, some don't. I have had the She's Nosferatu several times. She's Italian? quoted and usually people think that's funny. The She will become one herself repeated facial expressions is not funny at all imho.

So yes, enough without more. But it is a relief to see another film <90 min., which wants to be nothing more than a funny way to tell a story. That has been hard to find in recent years.
