Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has worked all his life on his father's Mexican ranch. When the ranch runs into financial trouble, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancée Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman could save the ranch if he promises to take on all the debts. But when Armando falls for Sonia and Raul's business activities prove to be illegal, all hell breaks loose, and they go to war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).
