A Shot in the Dark plot

"The picture that gets away with murder"

After the wealthy Mr. Ballon's driver is found dead, Inspector Clouseau sets out to find the killer. Everything indicates that the beautiful Maria Gambrelli did it. But Inspector Clouseau thinks she has something to hide. She is therefore quickly released from prison. It is then a succession of things that go wrong and more and more people die. Each time, the facts point in the direction of Mary. It is decided from above that Clouseau remains on the case, much to the chagrin of Chief Inspector Dreyfuss. Clouseau continues to cause trouble without being aware of it...

This is slowly starting to get very painful. I used to love the Pink Panther movies. Had to laugh so many times at all the nonsense and I'm talking about a little over ten years ago and beyond. I was in the mood for dry humor and slapstick, but in 2015 it often only brings a smile to my face. Cato is in it, but years ago I was rolling on the floor laughing, now I was watching disappointed. I see exactly what is happening and I know exactly when and what to laugh about, but it just doesn't excite me. In any case, this is better than the first film, but that's about it. I wanted so badly to like this again, but I couldn't. Three more movies to go...

This is one of my favorite Pink Panther movies and much better than the first, because now the emphasis is on the genius comedy of Sellers, where in the first film the emphasis was more on Sir Charles Lytton (The Phantom) and Clouseau only a supporting role had.

The Pink Panther (1963) was previously a romantic comedy, but from A Shot in the Dark (1964) the Pink Panther films start to go purely for humor. A smart move by Blake Edwards.

The leading role was now no longer reserved for David Niven but for Peter Sellers as the blundering inspector Jacques Clouseau. In this film, Clouseau's character is very similar to that in the first Pink Panther film, but Sellers is going to work more on his 'French' accent (which in most of the first film looked more like an Italian accent in my opinion).

The supporting roles of George Sanders as Monsieur Ballon, Herbert Lom as Chief Inspector Dreyfus and Burt Kwouk as Manservant Kato are also performed very well. Every Sommer like Maria Gambrelli is very amiable, playful and very attractive.

After this film, Blake Edwards would make 3 more top films in the Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers: The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978). We do not count the films that were made after that (and also Inspector Clouseau (1968)) for the record.

The music of Henry Mancini and his orchestra further enhances the quality of the film. The well-known Pink Panther theme is missing in A Shot in the Dark, but you can't miss it too much.

Mediocre.

Peter Sellers once again plays Clouseau in this successor to The Pink Panther. I might like this one a bit better than the latter, although they are films that I follow fairly quickly with limited attention. The slapstick is more often than not given to me, but there are still more dated things about this film. Not too bad though, but I might have found it funnier if I watched movies in 1964.

2.5
