Yin Shi Nan Nu plot

"A comedy to arouse your appetite."

Comedy about an old master chef who is discouraged by the rise of fast food restaurants and who also has a lot to do with his three stubborn daughters. After a failed engagement ten years ago, the eldest is no longer able to have anything from the opposite sex, while the others don't know how quickly they have to hook up with boyfriends. The miraculous food - which is only slightly appreciated by the daughters - mainly serves as a metaphor for (paternal) love.

Nice video indeed. Can agree with the words of Onderhond. Narratively it's all a bit too polished, and I found the storyline around the eldest sister pretty weak. The final scene is also a failure (much too explicit), but all in all a pleasant feel-good.

Ang Lee likes to "dissect" people, especially their problems, big and small, what they hide, their image outwardly and their true inner self, their aspirations, their differences...and also in this film where he a not so classic family takes the stage, let's say in a light-hearted way, although each of the members has something to worry about, but that is often the funny part. It is not all very deep and it does contain surprises, especially when it comes to mutual feelings.

It is at the same time enjoying the acting of the actors and certainly also the kitchen work and table scenes, neatly brought to the camera and with, in any case, charismatic Sihung Lung as the wise cook.

A somewhat emotional last shot closes this pleasant piece of film.

Ang Lee remains a sweet director.

Seen a number of Ang Lee films in the past month. This was the last for now. My idea of the man remains the same. As expected, a more than solid production with an even quality level, but I rarely had the wow feeling. The same goes for this Eat Drink Man Woman.

Chu's cooking skills are amazing to watch. That opening scene alone makes your mouth water. Sihung Lung also does a great job, just like in all other films I've seen from him. Cooking may be Chu's passion, but he has other concerns at the moment with his three live-in daughters, one more stubborn than the other.

The mutual family relationships and cultural customs are finely displayed so that it offers an interesting insight. Always fun to watch.
