Withnail and I plot

"If you don't remember the 60s don't worry, neither can they."

London 1969 - 2 'retired' (and deservedly unemployed) actors, Withnail and Marwood, tired of the dishes, crazy drug dealers and psychotic Irishmen, decide to leave their London flat for a holiday in the English countryside, in the cottage of Withnail's uncle Monty. But when they get there, it's raining non-stop, there's nothing to eat, and their survival skills seem a little underdeveloped. Things don't get much better when Uncle Monty comes by and turns out to have an unhealthy interest in Marwood.

Withnail & I is a classic in British film history and certainly a special viewing experience.

At first it also reminded me a bit of Bottom, although I liked that a bit more. Given the rather wacky characters, it is not surprising that this has acquired cult status. I liked the first half hour the best. A comical start, which is continued with nice dialogues, after which things go off the rails little by little. And after that derailment I couldn't really get into it anymore. The humor was usually not for me and especially the middle part was even annoying at times.

Although the acting was certainly not bad, the characters could not particularly fascinate me. I personally found Uncle Monty to be a downright annoying character. Towards the end it luckily gets a little better, but it didn't get any better. In retrospect, it's just a tough movie that somehow just wasn't right up my alley. Too absurd perhaps and otherwise just not fun enough.

2.0*

Fine British comedy that actually didn't make me laugh hard once, but often got a grin on my face. Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann are great as the two main characters and Richard Griffith is also very entertaining as raging homosexual Uncle Monty. The plot has very little to it, so the charm of the film lies mainly in the central trio. Not everything is equally amusing, especially the scenes with the drug dealer I found quite annoying, but overall I had a great time. Nice final scene too.

This kind of dry humor is not my cup of tea. Two friends (let's say loosers, or neurotics or ...) in the late 1960s move together to a cottage that belongs to Withnail's uncle Monty, an aggressive gay man who then also turns up on the spot. Afterwards I wondered what this film was about because I couldn't really detect a common thread between the drivel of those two guys. I didn't really find it funny and with some fast-forwarding I shortened the pain a bit, because this is a miserable uninteresting film with few sympathetic characters.
