“If I could kill someone with my mind right now, it would be you.”

Mediocre. Ashton Kutcher isn't my favorite actor anyway, and Cameron Diaz doesn't always pick the best scripts. Both are very mediocre, and they are not helped by the uninspired and bloodless script in What Happens in Vegas. As is so often the case in these kinds of films, the supporting actors are in better shape, and actors like Corddry, Sudeikis, Bell and Galifianakis provide at least some humorous moments.

Not good. I've both seen Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz play nice roles, but I couldn't do much with the egotists they have to radiate here. What a terribly typical American characters they portray here. The two are constantly bickering and trying to make each other's life miserable, while in the background their friends also interfere... It didn't make me laugh. The latter was so consistently the case that at times it becomes a bit uncomfortable, with the low point being those therapy sessions. I had a hard time getting through the first hour.

The formula is of course duly followed again, so it is inevitable that the two characters eventually start to have real feelings for each other. Although it is gooey and - because of the preceding part - not believable at all, it is the best part of the film. At least it just looks away. As far as I'm concerned, the film doesn't have the hysterical humor, so I could appreciate it more as soon as the brakes were put on a bit more. Looking back, though, it's too sparse to make the film worth watching.

2*

Mme.

In the end, it's still a fun rom-com in its own way, but it's a mystery to me how actors like Kutcher land in these kinds of roles. He may look handsome (always a plus in romantic movies), but his personality doesn't really fit the movie at all. Nevertheless, a running whole emerges.

I just don't like the combination between actors, especially because the chemistry between Diaz and Kutcher is only half worked out. It never really breaks loose, and when it does it feels too scripted to really leave a lasting impression. In any case, I couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen between the two of them, except that I didn't really like their comedic abilities.

It is therefore mainly the ideas themselves that work and are a bit funnier. Much better to swallow too, because fighting each other out of the house certainly works well in the context of entertainment. It's a bit of a shame that the film is then filled with all kinds of other nonsense, but in the end it works. Separately, the two lead roles do quite well, only together they are not very special. Always sad, but not disastrous.
