The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case plot
Ollie sees a newspaper report that one Ebeneezer Laurel has passed away, leaving behind a large estate. Parties interested in the estate should go to his mansion for reading the will. Stan can't remember if Ebeneezer was a relative, but they decide to go anyway.

This horror parody contains many recognizable elements: an old mansion, flashes of light, claps of thunder… Frank Austin as the butler makes you shudder (or laugh) with his terrifying facial expressions, aided by the lighting and false teeth. In the Spanish version, this role was played by Boris Karloff. There are various effects, such as a large fake bat on invisible strings. It is remarkable that the house has no electric lighting, but it does have a telephone.
Oliver Hardy first uses his catchphrase “Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into.” In reality, it's his own greed that gets them into trouble. Stan pulls off a few typical gags, like when he takes his time folding his umbrella while still standing in the pouring rain. Unorthodoxly, he lists the months: “Septober, October…” When they fall down the stairs, it's two stuntmen.
Besides horror and comedy, it is also a whodunit. Fred Kelsey plays the overly confident but incompetent inspector. The murderer is Lon Poff in a drag role. The fact that the Fat One is asleep in the opening shot is an indication that the sequel is just a dream. This is one of their better shorts.

The film has some charm, but overall it is outdated. We get less of the standard slapstick humor, it is more of a horror comedy. The typical overacting and drawn out scenes. But all in all it was still okay.
