The Hundred-Foot Journey plot

"Life's greatest journey begins with the first step."

Hassan Kadam is a culinary genius. The Kadam family, led by Papa, has been evicted from her native India and has settled in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Here they open the Indian restaurant Maison Mumbai. But when the cold-hearted owner of Le Saule Pleureur, a classic French restaurant with a Michelin star, gets wind of it, she actively protests.

Creamy like a creamy omelette, albeit with enough Indian spices, but without salt and pepper to make it spicier, funnier and more "real".

Actually a feel-goodie with Helen Mirren as a caricature of the madame of a chic restaurant and Om Puri more likely to belong as the owner of a snack and jenever bar.

Nice imagery and colors in a film that, with a "merci" and a "bonjour" and now and then some English with a French accent, should remind us that we are in la douce France, although of course there is also Michel Blanc as a gourmet mayor.

This gourmet tragi-comedy produced by Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey is entertaining throughout, but in the last half hour it does take a sentimental dragon. It clearly had to be all "all well that ends well" in the most clichéd way. What also disappointed me is that the Indians are more concerned with the extra Michelin stars of the restaurant than their own restaurant. Except for one scene, you never see people in Maison Mumbai and the Indian restaurant no longer has a place in the film. Unfortunately. That costs points, a lot of points in my rating. The most beautiful role is for Helen Mirren who lets her character evolve from repulsive to heartwarming.

Hallström is doing his thing.

It's always a bit of a wait with a director like him, especially since he always tends to throw himself into the most sentimental stories. Sometimes he crashes into the lamp, other times he has something magical. Here he does his own thing again, but it manages to work a little less.

Basically the opening of the film is the most interesting part. Strange really, because these are the only few scenes that are not set in France. What else is done with it, despite the large scale of what's happening in it, doesn't really apply. The film simply does its own happy thing once the bags are packed and thrown to France.

I thought the acting was bland. Everyone is in his or her role, but it is not impressive or really memorable. I therefore rather blame Hallström for this, who makes a kind of clipping of each character. Grabbed a number of regular personalities from a ton and thus designed the story, it is remarkable how little individuality this film has.

Furthermore, properly. Only extremely predictable and absolutely nowhere innovative, so there is no real impact. The war between culture is also brightened up with some velvet bows, but the environment remains beautiful and the story runs well. The lack of surprise is a bit unfortunate, but if you're familiar with the environment in question, it's even more enjoyable.
