Early De Sica before he made his name and fame as a director of neorealism films. Structurally, it is a classic comedy of errors. Not a top film, but the scenes with Anna Magnani, a monument of Italian cinema, are finger-licking good.

It's surprising that this was possible in Italy in 1941. It's certainly not a white telephone comedy, because the telephones are black. Vittorio De Sica shows his comic side, although there is also a social aspect to it with the contrast between the strict boarding school for orphan girls and the more well-to-do citizens. It is a comedy of misunderstandings with lies and knots to unravel. It makes fun of an old doctor who prescribed castor oil for every ailment.

With her piercing gaze, Adriana Benetti is reminiscent of Paulette Goddard. Teresa looks innocent, but manages to devise her plans. She borrows a passage from a play to arouse pity. A contrast to this is Loletta (Anna Magnani), who uses large, theatrical gestures both on and off stage. This was enjoyable escapism in a difficult time.

Vittoria De Sica, before his most famous appearance as a flamboyant, gray-haired fifty-something, but already responsible for the script and in the director's chair in this romantic comedy (love is central) in which he plays alongside a strong Adriani Benetti, plays the leading role.

As usual, De Sica mixes humor and drama and now a social aspect has been added and that is also the contrast between rich and poor.

But it is a comedy, based on misunderstandings, like the best French vaudeville, that provides an hour and a half of simple movie fun.

Anna Magnani, previously in a supporting role, seems like "a special guest" here, but still underlines her personality and class.
