Tropic Thunder plot
"Get Some."
A series of extraordinary events forces a group of actors shooting a war movie to take over their real-life roles. This is because they come into contact with a local drug gang at the location where the film is being shot.

In the right mood and in the right atmosphere it is quite a fun and at times funny film! It helps that the joy of the actors can be read, especially Jack Black & Robert Downey Jr. seem completely absorbed in it, anyway it was an original role for Robert to play.
Ben Stiller himself is regularly on the verge of over-acting, but often enough still manages to come out surprisingly.
As far as I'm concerned, the last half hour goes on too long, the comic is now far from it and the film got a slightly too serious undertone. Something that can work, but not with a plot like in Tropic Thunder which of course was already paper thin and served more as a guideline for the jokes.
Good to do if you're in a mealy mood.

Stiller doesn't exactly have my kind of humor, but this made me laugh. It saves that the plot, setting and characters have been ingeniously designed, where his clunky absurdity is perfectly in place.
Actors who get lost in the non-fictional set-up of their film recordings. The first half of the film reminded me of Three Amigos, where the actors also live in the illusion of a script, the second half must be all characters have their own ridiculous triumph to get out of the jungles of Vietnam.
A washed-up action hero with an inferiority complex, a method actor with an identity crisis, a drug-addicted buffoon, a latent gay pussy magnet and the changeling. They're all making their breakthrough in the survival mode of the 'recordings' and it's brought overly serious with quite infectious fun.
Quite a budget for the action part in my opinion, and it helps the excessiveness quite well. A lot of war puha that rages by with countless winks, exaggerated. Remarkably fine camera work.
Film thrives mainly on fun acting. Rarely had the idea that it must have been a party on set. Downey does a really good job, but actually nobody underperforms (because the script is so ridiculous, it's hard to realize). Not surprising that a Baruchel, in all its colorlessness, comes out the worst. For the rest one big schmierfest.
Stiller creates a perfect framework for his half-baked nonsense, and hardly anyone in the cast knows what to do with it. It's ridiculous how entertaining it is to see him as an action hero jump dead serious over a burning oil drum, while there is seas of space left and right. That little quirkiness is in the DNA of Tropic Thunder, within which it can hardly take on too exaggerated forms. It would almost make you jealous not to be an actor. 4*

Quite a funny movie. Especially Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. and an almost unrecognizable Tom Cruise are in shape!
