This is a combination of two kinds of humor. On the one hand it is a travesty air, a genre based on disguises, misunderstandings and lies, going back to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. On the other hand, it is a satire on the milieu of actors who want to make it in New York. They endure a succession of rejections and auditions and twist in every possible way in the hope of getting a part. I can be different!

Dustin Hoffman was figuratively cut for the role, because he had a similar background. It's crazy how he becomes someone completely different with the help of a wig, make-up and some changes in his movements and his voice. In the conversation with his agent, played by director Sidney Pollack himself, he switches seamlessly between those two characters. His Michael Dorsey is undergoing a change. In his disguise he really starts to feel like a woman in a macho world, with accompanying feminist statements. When he takes off his wig towards the end, he has grown as a person and has more empathy for women.

A little less developed are a few of the side characters. Jeff (Bill Murray) is mainly brought in to give Michael dialogue in his private time. In the end, Michael chooses the all-too-ideal love object Julie (Jessica Lange). A relationship with fickle Sandy (Teri Garr) would have been more exciting.

This is one of the better comedies of the '80s thanks to its quick succession of serious jokes and a starring role for versatile actor Dustin Hoffman.

OK.

You would think right away that a story like this is an ideal scenario for a failed project full of a load of bland and irritating humor. However, it is surprising that this film is not at all.

Hoffman plays a special role, but otherwise does a good job. However, it is strange that nobody notices that Hoffman is a man, because it is sometimes quite clear that a man is walking around in a suit. Mary, you just have to think about that.

For the rest, there is a surprising amount of drama to be seen, but it is not particularly strong. It's a bit of the standard things that pass the screen, which do entertain but never really involve the viewer emotionally in the film.

The humor is sometimes quite nice. A few laughs here and there, but a real comedy fan will come home a bit rude. This is actually not so much a comedy film, more a drama film with some smooth humor and a curious plot.

The movie is pretty fast, I didn't think so. Pollack does save the film with a sometimes more serious approach to the film. It does keep this movie from falling into a barrel of lame jokes, a well-known failure scenario, but instead also really uses his film a bit.

But, there is no real impact anywhere. It's just a bit too predictable though. You actually quickly know how the story works, and in that area that Pollack can also offer something more. Moreover, 116 minutes is also a bit long.
