Jean is a singer in a Shanghai nightclub. She falls in love with a sailor, who only temporarily stays in the city until his boat moves on again. He sees no future between the two and makes this clear in a letter. After misunderstandings, Jean travels to the United States to see her beloved. However, he is not so happy with her arrival.
