“Hey, you guys are fighting; it's like the '80s all over again!”

The beginning of Ricki and the Flash is good, and especially the scenes between Meryl Streep and her daughter Mamie Gummer are entertaining. Sharply written dialogues and it crackles between the two. Rock star mother who has neglected her children, and now that they are adults, sees them again. Enough material for an entertaining dramedy.

The scene in the restaurant where she also sees her two sons again, and the whole family comes together, is a highlight in the film. For some inexplicable reason, the film then chooses to have Ricki return to her former rock a roll life, which squeezes all the air out of the film. Boring is the right word. Even the ending with a Bruce Springsteen song can't change that.

Meryl Streep no longer needs to convince anyone of her talents and has a decent voice, but she is no Melissa Etheridge and her considerable limitations as a guitarist are greatly magnified by the presence of Rick Springfield with whom she forms the fictional band 'Ricki and the Flash' in this predictable family drama. Linda [Meryl Streep] left her family many years ago to pursue her musical dream and enthusiastically roams the US as her alter ego Ricki Rendazzo for performances in small cafes. When her ex-husband [Kevin Kline] informs her that their daughter [Mamie Gummer] has attempted to end her life, Linda travels to Indianapolis. But her daughter is not waiting for her, her eldest son Josh [Sebastian Stan] has not even invited her to his wedding and she still cannot accept the homosexuality of her youngest son Adam [Nick Westrate]. Plenty of work to do, you might say, but both Demme and Streep apparently came to the conclusion that the viewer would be better off with lots of musical intermezzos. It turns out to be a waste of time, unfortunately.

I wanted to watch Ricki and the Flash because I like movies where families play together. In this movie you find Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer, who are also mother and daughter in real life. However, I had already shown the movie before, but it didn't grab me with the first few minutes in which we see Meryl Streep singing as an old woman who is stuck in her youth. Nevertheless, I showed the movie again months later.

Ultimately, Ricki and the Flash is still quite fun to watch. After a while, I started to empathize with the characters, and Meryl Streep managed to relatively convince me in this role that I actually don't think suits her. I enjoyed watching Ricki and the Flash, but I don't think I'll watch it again anytime soon. I saw the term 'feelgood in-between' somewhere, and I think that's appropriate for this film.
