A treat for 80s classic rock lovers who can sing along for the majority of this musical. The use of hits from the likes of Foreigner, Poison, Warrant and David Lee Roth works great in the energetic first half of this rock musical in which Sherrie [Julianne Hough] travels to Hollywood with just $17 in the hope of building a career as a rock singer. She can't believe her luck when a chance encounter with Drew [Diego Boneta] leads to a job as a barmaid at the legendary Bourbon Run run by Dennis Dupree [Alec Baldwin], especially since her first day at work coincides with an exclusive appearance by the rock band Arsenal with rock icon Stacee Jaxx [Tom Cruise]. But a group of women led by Patricia Whitmore [Catherine Zeta-Jones], wife of the mayor [Ray Cranston], is determined to close this lake of destruction for good.

While Tom Cruise is quite campy as Stacee Jaxx, the first hour is very entertaining with some inventive musical mash-ups and a fantastic Catherine Zeta-Jones whose performance of Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With You Best Shot" is the highlight of the film. is. Unfortunately Jones fades into the background in the second half and we have to make do with a fairly standard romantic drama, framed by not too original power ballads. As a result, the second hour is a bit disappointing. This is one for music lovers. If you're not into power ballads and the aforementioned artists, you can take one star off this score.

It must have been around the year 2010 that I saw this musical on Broadway. It's been too long for me to make a one-to-one comparison with this movie. It seems to me that the film contains more popular 80s songs than the theatrical performance. What is almost the same is the infectious enthusiasm of the sexy cast. The story is not much, but that is only meant to string the music together. I am a lover of the music from (among other things) the 80s. That is mainly why I had a great time with this film. Julianne Hough is truly a picture.
