24 Hour Party People plot

"Share the Ecstacy!"

Manchester 1976. Cambridge graduate Tony Wilson attends a Sex Pistols concert. Inspired by this important moment in music history, they start a record label, 'Factory Records'. The first band they sign is Joy Division (later to go on as New Order). Other bands follow, and all are leading artists for their time. What follows is a story about music, sex, drugs, pop stars and the birth of one of the most famous clubs in the world, 'The Hacienda', similar to 'Studio 54'. This comedy shows what was going on in Manchester music from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.

A reasonable film that paints a picture of the music world in the late 80s/early 90s in the English city of Manchester.

Journalist Tony Wilson takes center stage as a record executive and the founder of a nightclub.

His entire biography is available on Wikipedia.

Sadly, Wilson passed away on August 10, 2007 from a heart attack while undergoing treatment for kidney cancer.

Not worth more than 2.5* to me, because these bands didn't have my personal attention in those years.

Although I have to admit that New Order is a great band.

The song "Bizarre Love Triangle" is just absolutely great!!!

As said no more than 2.5 *

Eh, strange, but also nice to see, this mix of comedy, music film and mockumentary. Tony Wilson guides the viewer in how he set up a great club in Manchester, where also great artists performed. I didn't find everything equally interesting, but that could also have something to do with the fact that I knew Joy Division/New Order, for example, and The Mondays again. In the end it doesn't matter that much, because I was captivated by the atmospheric picture that this film paints. It's a shame that Tony Wilson is so present with all his wisdom and endless bullshit.

The film is a nice way to give a picture of the 'Madchester' music scene at the time, especially around Factory Records. Brought with humor, as if through the eyes of Tony Wilson himself.

A small minus is how Ian Curtis's suicide is crammed in, because the reason for this is not clearly stated in the film. That makes it seem like such a silly act. But that might be because I'm a JD fan. Makes you want to listen to more Factory music.
