“Male chauvinist pig versus hairy legged feminist. No offense. You're still a feminist, right?”

“No, I'm a tennis player who happens to be a woman.”

Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Silverman, some humor, a strong and relevant message and of course the phenomenal decoration, great music and overall 70s atmosphere etc. What's not to like? Billy Jean King is an icon of tennis and a very powerful and colorful person, and Stone knows how to approach her to perfection. Bobby Riggs is a clown and Carell knows how to give him something human. Very strongly done. Battle of the Sexes gives you the feeling as a viewer as if you are being transformed to another time, and it is a wonderful feeling.

This one was on TV recently and I gave it a try. I didn't know the story and even though it was a sports movie, it was still worth watching.

It was well presented and the cast was on a roll. The long playing time didn't bother either.

Great movie.

A few weeks ago I saw On the Basis of Sex (2018), a similar film about gender equality, but with Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the spotlights. Both events take place in approximately the same period, not entirely coincidentally of course and undoubtedly there are still a few of those stories about equalities, just think of The Black Power Movement.

Battle of the Sexes has become a very light-hearted entertaining film, embracing heavy themes such as gender inequality, LGBs and infidelity with the cloak of love. BJK's relationship with her hairdresser is hardly criticized, perhaps also because in real life BJK's husband didn't make too much play of it. As he also said, there is only one thing that matters to her, and that is tennis.

Steve Carell, visibly amused, plays the flamboyant and provocative Bobby Riggs, a former No. 1 who urgently needs to take his life back at the age of fifty-five. Battle of the Sexes is a crowd pleaser with the necessary lightness that will especially appeal to the general public. It is a pity that Margaret Court comes off rather glum and unsympathetic ...
