"The greatest escape adventure ever told"
Papillon follows the epic story of Henri "Papillon" Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safe-cracker from the Parisian underworld who was wrongfully convicted of murder and given a life sentence and exiled to a concentration camp in French Guiana. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with the idiosyncratic convicted forger Louis Dega (Rami Malek). In exchange for his protection, he agrees to Papillon's escape, leading to an eternal friendship.

I also saw the film from 1973 a while ago and I have to say that this new version is certainly successful and can put its foot(s) against the original. Some nostalgics may look back with nostalgia to the time when Hollywood still had the necessary inventiveness, but unfortunately remakes are indispensable in the cinema image these days. This Papillon also sins here, but loses in quality. This version is a bit shorter and that improves the momentum of the film. And you can't just replace character actors like Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, although Hunnam and Malek are certainly not bad.
Malek, for example, beautifully portrays the scrawny vulnerable Dega, who has to make a pact with Papi in order to survive in the rock-hard prison. The friendship that has arisen between the two is well represented and the horror and (mental) exhaustion are also strongly displayed. Regardless of the fact that the film is known, the Danish director Noer manages to keep the film exciting and interesting. No extra surplus to the original, but also no annoyances compared to the original. That is also a lot.

What a misery. Everything the 1973 movie had, this movie doesn't have. The beautiful nature is missing, the emotion is not there, the appalling circumstances are poorly portrayed and the story is completely wrong. The movie with Steve McQueen is also a bit different from the book because the written story is quite extensive, but the story is at least somewhat correct. Everything has changed in this remake. It reminded me of the movie Commando with Schwarzenegger where he has to save his daughter from an island, but that movie is actually even better. Better read the book, watch the 1973 movie, and throw it in the trash. And if you liked the book, then the sequel Banco is definitely worth it. A little less exciting perhaps, but another great adventure!

Escape from Devil's Island
Always fun prison break movies. Especially if they are based on true events.
Perhaps partly due to the sun-drenched setting, I still had the feeling that it wasn't all that grim, hopeless and gloomy.
I also thought that Papillon came out of his cell very fresh after 5 years of solitary confinement. That was not so convincing.
I've never seen the original, but I'll definitely check it out for comparison.
