Michiel de Ruyter plot

"Wars are fought by many. History is made by few..."

When the Netherlands is attacked from all sides and stands on the brink of civil war, one man fights alone for the national interest: Michiel de Ruyter. But his successes make him too popular in the eyes of those in power. It is 1653 and in the battle of Ter Heijde the old admiral Maarten Tromp (admiringly called 'Bestevaer') dies in the arms of the young, talented Michiel de Ruyter. He urges Michiel not to sail with political winds, but to fight only for the national interest. The Netherlands is not only at war with the English, but is also on the brink of civil war: Orange supporters and republicans are fighting for power.

For a change I won't fall for 'Michiel de Ruyter' (2015) because it neatly sweeps certain hot topics, such as another experience about the pirate/naval hero, under the rug. This was to be expected in a zeitgeist in which people need clarity and simple stories. De Ruyter was a hero. The de Wit brothers were heroes. Dutch flags that flutter fully in the image and an English flag that goes along with a sinking English ship. No, I think it's mainly a strong example of Dutch self-loathing: seeing your own complex history through the lens of the kind of Hollywood films that have been out of favor for a decade or so

No cliché or cheap effect is spared to make it look more Hollywood than Hollywood: exploding things, wrong one-liners, the title hero is a blank figure with no personality, except that he is acting a bit tough on ships. Well, he is a family man and a go-getter. Even the fonts on the announcement and the bombastic soundtrack feel like a half-baked copy of dozens of other works. The frustrating thing is that the atmospheric views of old Dutch markets and the subtle references to Dutch paintings are still quite funny, but then the automatic pilot returns and screams: 'Epic, I am an epic, see me be epic!' A more modest film with a few focus points would probably have produced a better production than this chaotic mess.

I was hesitant for a few years, but guess what: great movie! A wonderfully compelling story, fascinating characters, beautiful design and a lot of spectacle. Trevor Morris's Hans Zimmer-esque score may also be there. The many naval battles look mostly fine, with a little too much use of flashy cgi, but this is rarely really disturbing. After seventeen previous attempts, director Roel Reiné has finally delivered a film that is worth watching.

For many years, Flanders was the plaything between England, France, the Netherlands and Spain. That makes your own history a bit more difficult. In any case, figures like Tromp or de Ruyter were never our great historical figures. The only seafarer I knew was Piet Hein, because of the well-known children's song about the silver fleet. In the meantime I have learned a lot, of course and last year I became even more acquainted with Michiel de Ruyter and the naval battles in the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. No wonder that time got its own movie. We miss something like that in Belgium.

The only Dutch actors I know were the actors of De Ruyter and the old Tromp. And maybe that's an advantage. The film aims to paint a picture of the famous admiral (although they omit his part in slavery) and a series of historical events. And that worked out quite well. It already gives a better picture of the time of that time. The film is clearly in the hands of someone who has experience with the genre. Director Roel Reiné also takes care of the cinematography. The color palette creates a warm glow that is reminiscent of the paintings that were made there (whereby I immediately recognize the paintings of Willem van de Velde). There is the necessary action and yet also slightly exaggerated hero worship of De Ruyter. But that's okay every now and then.
