Still a must for fans of cannibal movies. Not because it is so high quality, but because it is considered the first of its genre and thus gave the starting signal for a lot of copycats.

Unlike many other genre peers, it is not set in South America but in Asia. A man is captured during an expedition and soon falls in love with the most beautiful girl in the village. And rightly so, because Me Me Lai is beautiful and can also be admired here more naked than dressed. Later she does it again thinly in Jungle Holocaust, among other things. Despite the terrible dubs that the genre often has to contend with, I certainly liked the chemistry between Rassimov and Me Me Lai.

What appealed to me a lot less was the romanticized story itself. At a certain point it's fucking hopping from hut to hut without really heads rolling. Because the cannibals don't come across as very hostile. Logical too, because John is increasingly popular. Still, there is quite a bit to enjoy with some gore here and there. Although this founder is also full of animal suffering. You hear less about it because the film is a lot less known, but I thought it was at least as bad as in Cannibal Holocaust, with the crocodile as the highlight.

Enjoyable for the enthusiast, but later overtaken by Cannibal Ferox and the sublime Cannibal Holocaust, among others.

The Man from Deep River may be the movie that started the cannibal genre, but other than that historical note, it's not much of a memorable movie. The biggest problem is that it's all transparently fake. We have what appears to be a Brit who does all conversation in Italian. Of course he ends up in the bush and is captured by a tribe, but nowhere do you get the idea that we are really in the jungle, that 'John Bradley' is really in danger or really becoming part of the tribe, or that we are too dealing with a real tribe rather than a collection of Thai amateur actors picked off the street. To make it even more unbelievable, a romance is also built into the plot, because there is a local beauty in the village who naturally falls in love with our stranger.

The cannibal films are known for their brutal violence (especially films such as Cannibal Holocaust and Ferox), but that is also quite tame here - although this film unfortunately has extensive real animal suffering. And I mean really serious extensive. Also something the genre is known for. Cannibalism is also a bit of a side plot to be honest: the tribe that John Bradley ends up in and is absorbed into isn't cannibalistic, but the Kuru tribe they end up fighting against is. No, I can't say I was impressed by this; fake, de-energized, large chunks feel more like a rom-com or something like The Blue Lagoon, except for the occasional crocodile or monkey slaughter.

For me, this film had to rely entirely on the beautiful erotic pictures of Maraya, who was a feast for the eyes in her nakedness. As a cannibal movie it hardly amounts to anything, although I didn't find that particularly annoying and I can't call this a horror movie either, but actually just an average adventure movie whose outcome was predictable anyway. The animal cruelty was of course a downside, but I'm not going to judge the film too much on that. If it bothered me so much I shouldn't have watched it.
