"The destiny of a soldier. The honour of a slave. The fate of an empire."

The year is 140. Twenty years earlier, the Ninth Legion of Rome, commanded by Flavius Aquila, marched north. It never returned. Flavius' son Marcus is determined to mend his father's damaged reputation. Accompanied only by his slave Esca, Marcus rides out to the north. During the journey, Marcus realizes that his father's disappearance may be linked to Esca's mysterious identity. The mystery deepens when they come face-to-face with the fearsome Seal Prince's warriors.

Seems a bit underrated. Of course, it's too much to be part of the real toppers. Occasionally standard like the way fight scenes are portrayed, and too much straight forward in the storylines. But also: no unrealistic massive battles. No drawn-out romantic interest. No goodies vs baddies. No obvious anachronisms. In short: there are a lot of sword&sandal movies that do a lot worse (King Arthur, anyone?) And an image that I know will stay with me for a long time... of that kid who gets punished at the end for his treason... Kill, but then put lovingly in the water. ouch. [\spoiler] All in all, a 7.5, but I'm rounding down.

I thought it was still too good. It does take a while before the film really gets going, but once the two heroes go through the Scottish highlands in search of the eagle, I thought the film was at its best. There are some movies with Romans where I have been much more annoyed by the time image that is given. While the Roman Empire was an advanced civilization, many tribes practiced barbarian and pagan customs. These were only stopped later with the spread of Christianity. For enthusiasts there is also the better (at least for me) Centurion (2010) - MovieMeter.nl

Usually I'm not that fond of this category of movies, old history, because you often see things (a watch on the wrist) that don't belong in time and the stories are often of the same cloth.

This film adaptation of the book "The Eagle of the Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliff from 1954 could charm me. This was probably due to the catchy story and the good acting of the actors. I also didn't really look at 'historical errors' in the film adaptation.

My overall rating is a 7.
