Philo Beddoe is a trucker and a great bare knuckle fighter. With two friends, Orville, who arranges prize fights for him, and Clyde, an orangutan who won on a bet, he treks through the San Fernanado Valley in search of a cold beer, some country music and the occasional fight. He falls for a country and western singer who runs off when she realizes he's getting too serious. Phil, Clyde and Orville go in search of her, being harassed by a biker gang along the way.

Nice film about a trucker whose buddy is an orangutan. The story has very little to say and here and there it is even stupid. But that doesn't take away from the fact that the film looks nice and is cheerful in nature (despite or partly because of the many pub fights and fist fights). The whole country atmosphere is nice too. The same goes for the characters.

The first fight movie with Clint Eastwood and the orangutan. Perfect for 12 to 16 year olds! I've watched this and the sequel quite often. Still very nice when reviewed, but I think you should have seen it as a young teenager. This really is the kind of brawl movie that Bud Spencer and Terence Hill became famous for. It's funny that Eastwood takes his own image at the time completely off the table here.

Brawls, country gigs, difficult loves, crazy bikers, honking trucks, roadside restaurants, arguing hilliebillies, an orangutan and above all.... Clint Eastwood! Great... Lots of laughs and ultimately little wrong with this comedy.. One minus : the terrible Sondra Locke.
