Dark Phoenix plot

"A Phoenix will rise. The X-Men will fall."

Ever since Jean Gray literally rose from the ashes like a phoenix during a perilous rescue mission, she has been nicknamed 'The Phoenix'. But from that moment on, she has greater powers than ever and faces severe childhood trauma. The X-Men try to keep her from becoming a threat to the world.

uh.

Beforehand I saw a trailer of Star Wars, also something from Spider-Man. The verdict is actually the same as with this X-Men movie. I've seen them all, but a year later it means nothing to me anymore. It also all flows smoothly into each other, because it is just uniformity after all, with only some details differing in the margins.

With this film, the entire franchise makes even less difference, because it mostly stands on its own. Apart from a few references to previous films, you can just go into this unprepared. On the other hand, you don't have to expect much new, Kinberg delivers a completely generic film and as a director knows nothing to add.

The only thing that stands out is that X-Men always has to be so melodramatic. That's nice if you like the characters, but all that kitschy whining and difficult viewing within a world that cannot be taken seriously is not for me. Zimmer's honking doesn't help either and when a lot of action scenes are invariably closed by some emotional highlight, it just gets in the way of a fun movie.

Unfortunately, there isn't much time for cool either. That you have a mega phoenix moment during the finale, it comes on screen for about two seconds before cutting again to hard-looking mutants who are dealing with loss. Whatever you feel like.

Fortunately, the last act is still quite spectacular and action-packed, that's about the only positive thing I have to say about this film. As long as no directors are allowed here who actually have something to add, these kinds of films remain of little or no value to me.

1.5*

Dark Phoenix's flame was extinguished before it could ignite in full force. A sour media frenzy burned this X-Men film to insignificant, fading ash before anyone even saw it. It's sad how much most people value other people's opinions and don't bother to judge for themselves. As a result, Dark Phoenix had no chance from the start.

Because, come on; The movie isn't as bad as they say. All X-Men ingredients are present. Obviously the focus is on Jean Grey. Turner gets a lot of criticism, but in my opinion she puts down an excellent Grey: powerful, fragile and visibly irritated by dilemmas. Some scenes are really beautiful and compelling, like the confrontation with Maximoff in which he realizes how powerful Jean is - the look in her eyes, very strong.

I disagree that the rest of the X-Men are cardboard characters and Kinberg opts for an easy iteration in the relationship between Raven and Charles, overlapping with Jean. The choices are relevant and logical. Depth, background and action are well dosed - in my opinion a lot better than in the closing piece of The Avengers. Chastain's ice-cold role as villain is also more than successful.

I had a great time with this final chord. It was never too much, maybe even a little too austere. That's my only critical point. Hence 3.5 stars.
