Texas and California seceded from the US and joined together to form the Western Army to battle the US Army. Florida has also declared independence. Journalist Joel [Wagner Moura] and photographer Lee [Kirsten Dunst] decide to travel to Washington DC in the hope of an interview with American President [Nick Offerman]. They are joined by journalistic heavyweight Sammy [Stephen McKinley Henderson] and young, ambitious photographer Jessie [Cailee Spaeny]. Garland consciously chooses not to provide any explanation for the conflict and was clearly inspired by Apocalypse Now and The Killing Fields. Apart from some questionable special effects (a little too many military helicopters), this is technically excellent. What is missing is a story and someone to sympathize with: the journalists are nothing more than opportunists. In addition, there is a bizarre soundtrack and an abrupt, unsatisfactory denouement. The only dramatic highlight comes from Jesse Plemons, as a truly terrifying militia member.

Director Alex Garland is certainly not a name that confines himself to a single genre and so Civil War is a mixture of all kinds of perspectives. It is mainly a road film in which various (dangerous) situations are alternated, but fans of large-scale action will have to wait a while until the finale arrives. The entire civil war is mainly pushed into the background and Garland's screenplay mainly prefers themes such as war journalism and its psychological consequences. I didn't think the latter was so strong with the characters of Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny, but at least the intention is clear and both members act very well. A real killer for the general atmosphere is the obtrusive choice of music, which constantly interrupts the images and offers no added value. Nevertheless, Garland apparently thought differently, but that negates just about any exciting situation. It is a missed opportunity, because the sound design is very impressive and comes into its own during the finale.

Civil War contains enough absurd, bizarre and unique images to remain memorable, but I nevertheless found the promising concept somewhat underutilized and the atmosphere very variable. It is definitely above average, but I wouldn't be surprised if this goes down completely wrong with part of the audience.

The film was probably inspired by the polarization and the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters and can be seen as a warning of what this could lead to, but the portrayal of the resulting civil war seems mainly inspired by the well-known Hollywood theme of the zombie apocalypse without zombies because the film is hardly political. The film is mainly about war journalism and this is also depicted in a lack of nuance: the journalists are said to be mainly driven by the adrenaline rush (only when you are in fear of death do you realize that you are alive) and their postmodern world in which the right photo - the image - is more important than reality that is depicted. In a somewhat strange way, the film is also a kind of coming-of-age story of a girl who is new to the profession but, through a lot of blood, corpses and fear of death, quickly grows up into a routine who is the somewhat slow or less eager surpasses old hands.

All in all, the film has less depth or layers than I had hoped and the film has to rely on a few somewhat tense moments in which the journalists sometimes voluntarily and sometimes unwillingly find themselves in a situation where their own lives are directly at stake.

As a side note, the music selection is striking and includes songs by Silver Apples and Suicide who attracted attention in their time as pop pioneers in electronic music.
