Battle Los Angeles plot

"It's not war. It's survival."

For years, UFOs have been observed and documented all over the world: Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, those vague observations become a stark reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. While major cities around the world are being destroyed, only Los Angeles is still holding out in a battle never thought possible. A Navy sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon must put a stop to an enemy that surpasses anything they've ever fought against.

With an uninspired title like Battle: Los Angeles (or in full World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles) you know that you don't have to look for originality.

It follows the ground mission of a small platoon that, with the help of staff sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), must evacuate a number of civilians before airstriking.

That mainly means a lot of action and ground fighting, but it never really sticks. This is primarily because it all remains rather small-scale. We never really get the sense that the alien invasion is reaching beyond the US, let alone LA. There is no metropolis to be seen, no world leaders, no global evacuations, nothing.

Second, the navies are completely interchangeable, so I didn't care who died. The emotional moments were also completely dead. Aaron Eckhart does convince, but can't save the weak script.

The CGI was disappointing at first, but thankfully gets better as the film progresses, with the best shots towards the end of the film. It is a pity that the design and properties of the aliens were disappointing.

All in all, an unoriginal film that doesn't really excel at anything.

A day after highly decorated Sergeant Michael Nantaz [Aaron Eckhart] decided to focus solely on training new recruits, the military withdrew his request when it became clear that meteors would hit 8 different places in the US. What should have been a rescue mission turns into a battle when the meteors turn out to be carrying hostile aliens. The always charismatic Eckhart is perfectly cast as the veteran who uses all his intuition and experience to defeat a completely unpredictable foe, and Rodriguez proves yet again why she is among the best female action heroes of her generation. The story is simple but fast-paced and dynamically filmed and edited action scenes provide a pleasantly elevated dose of adrenaline.
