Harlem in a gray seventies coat with characteristic music, clothing and lingo. Add to that the typical city acoustics and you have an atmosphere that quickly has an edge in my opinion. Shear delivers a nice, raw performance with some pretty spicy violence and characters who don't mince their words. The story is of course not that much, but there is still something to be gained from the leading roles.

The gangster bosses are those colorful types who flourish in this kind of blaxploitation cinema. It's great how Richard Ward belts out Doc Motherfuckin' Johnson with his smoked voice. Dressed in pimp red, the generously moustached Shevvy may even secretly be the eye-catcher of the film. With such an appearance you can film someone from a distance. That's what stays with me about this final.

“What else brings whites to Harlem but business?”

Excellent police thriller. What is immediately striking about Across 110th Street is the unparalleled atmosphere that director Barry Shear immediately manages to create, and New York looks wonderfully raw, grimy and dirty. The film exudes vibrancy and energy, and at no point does Shear take his foot off the accelerator. This is also due to the swinging and penetrating camera work, and the great acting of Quinn, Kotto, Benjamin and Bernard, among others. The film is tough, exciting and politically incorrect at times, and in this world there is no room for a simple good guys vs. bad guys story. Good thing, too.

In the 1970s, 110th Street was the dividing line between black Harlem and white New York at Central Park. The film obviously addresses themes such as racism and violence, but it is also primarily a gangster film. Roughly filmed with some film noir and blaxploitation. The film is still best known for the title song by Bobby Womack. But the film is more than a long music video for the song. 5 years earlier, In the Heat of the Night was made with Sidney Poitier as a black cop who not only has to fight crime, but also has to contend with racist colleagues. This is also the case in Across the 110th Street with Yaphet Kotto as a black cop who is put in charge of the case. But it rather focuses on the crime story here, without disguising the tension between the two officers.
