In 1977 the Lincoln Continental Mark V appeared on the market. With its blatantly copied Rolls-Rolls grille, astronomical fuel economy and boat size, it hardly had anything to do with an automobile. On the eve of the second oil crisis, the 7.5-litre engine was not exactly the right block in the right place. Yet the mastodon only delivered a little more than 200 hp and the passengers in the back seat were in the pitch dark.

What does this car have to do with Universal Soldier? Well, somehow this car is so wrong that it's right again for me. No pretensions, just straightforward and devoid of any kind of finesse and subtlety. This Jean-Claude van Damme classic is not much different: explosions everywhere, clumsy action and bad one-liners.

A few years ago I saw White House Down in iMAX-3D and this film had a similar experience. Totally ridiculous, but oh-so entertaining. Coincidentally, Universal Soldier is from the same director and that might explain the fun. The story can be explained in two sentences and yet it entertains me effortlessly for the full hour and a half.

Dolph Lundgren (I'm all ears… ) and Jean-Claude van Damme (I'm alive!) are perfectly cast because they don't have to behave very humanely. As a result, the action, which also looks surprisingly good, and fights come out well. The fights in the pub are especially hilarious. In a more recent Van Damme film, this scene is more or less 're-enacted'.

For Jean-Claude van Damme himself, this film should have meant his definitive breakthrough. However, his cocaine use and the rejection of a multi-million dollar offer from Universal kept him stuck in the B movies. Eternal shame, because the Belgian can fight like the best.

Not too good.

An offshoot of the 80s work. This may have been made in '92, but the film itself doesn't show that. Universal Soldier is a typical 80s movie in everything, unfortunately not really something I'm passionate about anymore. Especially not considering the people in front of and behind the camera.

Lundgren is the biggest schlemiel of hope. He fails completely as a bad guy, more laughable than dangerous. Van Damme isn't much better, you can't call him a winged actor either. And Walker is only a little bit like the third wheel on the wagon, completely uninteresting.

But the problem is mainly that the action is not really much more. In terms of dynamics, spectacle and entertainment, it is just a cumbersome and somewhat boring event. The comic moments are also completely out of place and Emmerich as a director knows nothing to add.

Remains a somewhat clunky film that still holds up in terms of fluency, but otherwise has absolutely nothing to offer. No wonder it got so many sequels.

Universal Soldier a film for two great action heroes who do their thing perfectly. The action is occasionally combined with some humor. Great combo in this one.
