kitsch.

However, the premise is nice enough for an entertaining film. A group of impossible characters who together form one team (only Sawyer doesn't really belong there, Mina is an edge case as a woman) and tackle some villains.

In terms of actors, it's disappointing. Connery is a bit stale for this role, the rest not really juicy enough. Only The Invisible Man is nice, but you don't see that very often (pun intended). The rest is somewhat identityless. It's a shame, because it's the characters that this film has to rely on.

Visually a lot has been tried, but 11 years later it looks really sad. A weird mix of CG and traditional effects that completely misses the mark. Nothing spectacular, often it's just very ugly. But at least a bit daring to create your own style. You can't even say that about the soundtrack, just third rate junk.

The film is a bit too long, the second half drags on (also because the action isn't much) and doesn't live up to its premise. One that may quietly sink, never to resurface.

1.5*

Respectable Victorian literary characters reduced to cartoon characters, with apart from Sean Connery a rather uninteresting cast and very mediocre FX: the exploding building in Kenya, old London, the Nautilus, the collapsing Venice, M's burning laboratory complex - even the witch's latest fire looks fake, although Jekyll/Hyde's transformations and Skinner's "appearance" do look acceptable. Normally I don't have such a problem with bad FX, but here everything looked fake.
Hilarious commendation on the DVD cover of Oliver Parkers Dorian Gray (2009) : "Dorian Gray is a gripping fantasy thriller based around the character from The league of extraordinary gentlemen !" (IN CAPITAL LETTERS UNDERSTANDING) And as for the Dorian of this movie, you can see here why Stuart Townsend was replaced after a few days of shooting The Lord of the Rings.

Still fun.

But, as expected, not brilliant. However, I also expected that this would be even worse, with bad special effects etc. I also expected that this would be one of the DC movies that took itself so seriously again. Most DC movies with an average like this always seem to be that way.

But in the end it was still a playful film with fast action and images. But what is especially the salvation is the humor that was sufficiently present. Especially Connery is of course suitable in his role in this case and his humor is also the best off the ground.

Special effects are now somewhat outdated, but not very annoying. Of course there are some flaws here and there, but in general the film manages to hold its own. Especially in the opening, where a tank crashes into a building.

Also a healthy pace, which is also necessary to fill a 110 minutes a bit properly. Actually just a bit too long, and it also has too few memorable scenes to justify such a playing time. 90 minutes for a story like this is appropriate.

Acting isn't great, but it suffices. I only thought Wilson was below average, but he also gets a bit of a dull role. The humor is sufficiently present, but it is not very funny and it does not go much further than some sexual views and some puns.

Still smooth enough to guide you smoothly through the playing time. The most spectacular part, however, is in the middle, leaving you hungry towards the end. But just enough, come on, I'm in a generous mood.
