Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows plot

"The game is afoot."

If the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, everything points to a suicide, said Inspector Lestrade. But according to Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.), the prince was murdered, and that murder is just one piece of an ominous puzzle devised by Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). A trail of clues leads Holmes to an underground gentlemen's club, where he and his brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry) raise a glass to Dr. Watson (Jude Law), to celebrate his last night as a bachelor. At that club, Holmes meets Sim (Noomi Rapace), a fortune teller who sees much more than she tells. Because she also knows more about the murder of the prince, she threatens to become the murderer's next victim.

“If we can stop him, we shall prevent the collapse of Western civilization... No pressure.”

This second Sherlock Holmes adventure from Ritchie has the same strengths as the first part. The amazing interplay between Downey Jr. and Law, the Victorian era that really comes alive (the sets and cinematography are amazing), lots of speed, humor and strong dialogue and of course Ritchie's well-known fast and original editing.

The story is a bit messy and the part with Rapace doesn't come out well. Both the character, the actress and the entire storyline. It was certainly not disturbing, but a slightly better effect would have been welcome. Fortunately, as the iconic Professor Moriarty, Harris is fantastic. The action scenes are fantastic, with the scene in the train as the highlight for me. Bring on part three. With Rachel McAdams please (it's listed on IMDB, so it must be).

Nice.

I can't remember much about the first part, except that there was a bit less action in it. Also more mystery I think, this sequel is full of entertainment. That makes it all a bit less as Sherlock Holmes of course, but as an experience also sometimes a bit more fun. I actually prefer this part over the first part.

I don't prefer it because there is more action in it, but mainly because it has improved visually. Ritchie once again proves to be a good director who can handle multiple genres. There are some very memorable moments in this film, just think of the forest chase. And so the film is full of visual delights.

Acting is very solid. Downey Jr can now dream of these kinds of roles. He's just right for it, and Ritchie seems to know this very well too. Law also does very well as Watson, but as a character is a bit more boring and Downey Jr also demands all the space between the two. (Obviously). I thought Rapace was a bit weaker.

Visually it is very cool. The action scenes are very well timed and executed. The CGI occasionally drops a few stitches, but there is often enough detail to disguise this. The action sometimes goes on nicely and regularly comes with a few surprises. Despite the fact that a number of tricks are repeated, I did not find it repeated at all.

In terms of story, it is a bit too easy of course, especially for a film in the Sherlock Holmes series. Ritchie mainly makes it a kind of Marvel hero without the superpowers. Sometimes there are still light mystery elements in it, but in general it is mainly action and comedy packed in an airy and old-fashioned environment. Not much Holmes, of course.

It all goes on a bit too long and the bad guys are a bit bland. For the rest it is an excellent film in terms of visuals and acting. Certainly not a boring movie to sit out for a while.

The sequel to Sherlock Holmes (2009), and in my opinion even better than the first. What this film manages to do better than its predecessor, is put down more and better action scenes. The film starts with a nice action moment. Of course, many characters return, and new characters appear as well. In short, it was a good movie well worth watching
