From the same Marvel sheet and suit. Pubescent, uninteresting, not very funny and above all simply boring. There is lousy acting by Holland and Zendaya. Gyllenhaal also doesn't show up and is a miscast. I long for Tobey and Kirsten, when Spider-Man was just Spider-Man without all that visual bombast.

The first hour really isn't about anything at all, and I loved that. Just a carefree holiday movie with very nice characters, good humor and a nice summer vibe in it. A little bit of Europe, some photogenic locations in it, a little high school, a little love and now and then some action in between that immediately pops, partly due to the good cgi.
The second hour is more plot-driven and not the most interesting story, with an action scene that is too long at the end (where the cgi also occasionally stutters) and unfortunately also a story that you feel coming (from second 1 you know : Gyllenhaal is not who he is). The film then no longer manages to surprise and does not manage to get the atmosphere of the first hour, although they try to do so now and then. Furthermore, a wonderful soundtrack (that song at the end credits), good tempo, and a strong chemistry between Holland and Zendaya. 3.5*, but based on the first hour I would have liked much higher.

“I think Nick Fury just hijacked our summer vacation.”

Entertaining Marvel movie. Tom Holland as Spider-Man is becoming one of my favorite Avengers, and in Far from Home he shows why again. The fun and youthful bravado radiate from Holland, and let's hope he never loses it. It gives the film a shot of energy that it also needs. The humor works, Holland and Zendaya make a charming couple (the film really comes alive in their scenes together), Gyllenhaal puts down a perfect Mysterio, the action scenes and special effects look great and Tomei, Jackson and Favreau are always a big plus in the Marvel movies.

The two biggest problems of the film are that the story has little to do and that there is no suspense. In Homecoming you had a glaring Keaton, but such a bad guy is missing here. As good as Gyllenhaal is. Actors like Batalon, Revolori, Starr, Smoove and a number of new characters add little and are more of an annoying interruption (with the exception of young Rice as Betty). Given the great first post-credit scene, Jon Watts would do well to strip off some characters in the third installment and focus on the greatest strength of his trilogy. Holland (who as Spider-Man really has to take on a leadership role), Zendaya, Tomei, Batalon (in a smaller role), Rice (in a bigger role) and Favreau, supplemented by a strong villain. Plus the nice combination of humor, action and a coming of age story. That's all you need for a strong third.
