After The Expendables, another old Stallone movie was taken out of the closet. Haven't seen you in almost 20 years. Over the Top meets the definition of the 80s movie successfully. From the simple story to the wrong soundtrack. Personally, I think it's one of the better Cannon movies. This time Stallone gets to do more than just shoot; he is endeared and fond of that little nasty boy that is his son and conveys it well. Pretty clever to use the father-son bond in the film as a sporting motivator in the final match. Sport is indeed a "mental thing" . Nice and uncomplicated, with a Stallone that comes out a little more diverse.

Over the Top is of course a very bad 80s movie. The script is hilarious, the acting sometimes leaves something to be desired and it's all too stupid for words. The sugary sweet story with the son is also something to cringe from time to time. The enamel just won't come off my teeth when you see that kid go sip again.

And yet it's not terrible to look at. The wrong music, the sweating men, the incredibly crazy pelvises during the arm wrestling (they must have had a lot of fun while making it) and the many wrong figures make it a somewhat acceptable ride every now and then. The finale is amazing, how they can stretch something so stupid for so long with suspense.

Perhaps there is still a little bit of youth sentiment attached to it in combination with my love for the wrong 80s, because this causes a small increase in my score.

2.0 >2.5*

Over the Top is a great Stallone film from the 80s. A road trip full of adventure quickly works for me and the relationship between father and son sheds its wits during the ride.
