Weak display.

I felt him hanging in the air early on. Reeves who already looks completely lost in this movie. I don't understand why he shows up here anyway, because he clashes quite a bit with Asian culture. But the rest isn't doing great either.

Both everyone shows terrible acting. You shouldn't let them speak English for such a huge amount of time anyway. Shibasaki was absolutely horrible. I've really rarely seen anyone read her lines so fake and inconclusively in a movie.

Visually, the huge budget has done absolutely no wonders. Despite the fact that there are some nice things, the CGI is a bit too corny and the action too short and absent. If it seems to go loose for a while, the film doesn't pull out again.

The film is boring out there, despite the still quite interesting story. However, there is simply too little fantasy and action and too much boring drama. Drama that absolutely does not work due to appalling acting performances that give the film a kind of comedy feel.

It's a shame that the film never really succeeds, because the strongest was the ending with the Seppuku. However, most of it was thrown away anyway and that's a shame. There was much more potential in this than was ultimately realized.

The title refers to 47 heroic Japanese warriors, whose bravery, loyalty and self-sacrifice are commemorated annually by the Japanese people on December 14. The story is captivating and some fine martial arts can be admired here and there, but Reeves is colorless as the half-Japanese outsider who has to undergo the necessary humiliations to prove his dignity. Rinsch relies too much on mostly unconvincing CGI and part of the Japanese cast seems to only be able to speak English phonetically. Considering the high budget and the expectations that come with it, definitely a disappointment.
