This was a nice surprise.

As in, nice that there is a new Elliot, hadn't heard anything about it before. The film itself is less of a surprise, since it is mainly a repeat of Mary and Max. That is not a disaster of course, given the frequency that Elliot releases new films, but those who didn't like that film will not find much here either.

For me it works, that narrative full of small, quirky details. Reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson sometimes, but Elliot still knows how to give it his own twist, it's especially a bit edgier sometimes, without it becoming vulgar or cheap. Furthermore, the visual style is great, the type of stop-motion that suits me best.

4.5* and an extensive review

It's hard not to place this one right next to Mary And Max - and perhaps not entirely fair - but the style, the tone and the way it finds beauty in sadness are so similar that comparisons are almost inevitable.

And that's a shame, because this is another gem, but in my opinion (based on a viewing from a long time ago) Mary & Max is still the better film. The unlikely friendship in that film was more touching, the quirky portrayal in details was more surprising and although Memoir is a bit more richly animated in terms of set design and also takes a step outside the lines in terms of content, the simplicity of Mary & Max was a large part of the charm.

Mostly a repetition exercise for Elliot, who scores on the same points as with his debut. Mary & Max was (for me) a breath of fresh air through animation land at the time, especially because it managed to find humor and lightness in unusually heavy themes and characters with serious trials, something that the standard Western studios always stay away from. Memoir does in fact exactly the same and therefore perhaps carries less element of surprise in it, but to be honest: it convinces once again one hundred percent.

One specific negative point I found was Snook's voice acting, which didn't bring her character to life as well as Collette did in M&M.

Furthermore, this is easily a contenter for best film of the year, so don't be fooled by all my negative considerations. Elliot can make a hundred more of the same caliber as far as I'm concerned, I'll enjoy it every time. 4*

Not as strong as Mary And Max, the previous film by director Adam Elliot, but still a beautiful and compelling story, beautifully animated. The theme and characters have similarities with that previous film, something that works to the disadvantage of this Memory Of A Snail, but in the end the script and voice cast are special enough to make an impression.
