Especially thanks to the scenes with a magical edge, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is worthwhile. The distinctive drawing style must also be mentioned. Not that it is stunningly beautiful or anything like that, but it certainly gives it its own atmosphere. Narrative, it's a bit weaker. As others have already stated, the part with the five suitors is particularly interesting. Fundamental flaw in the script is of course that the girl doesn't just tell her father that she wants to go back to the countryside and marry that woodworker. Very strange that such a basic fact is not or hardly addressed, because it does not fit at all in the characters that are presented that she waits so patiently and that father is not exactly authoritarian or the person with the pants on. Anyway, the two hours and fifteen minutes apparently had to be filled. At times mediocre, at times quite good, for me this is 3*.

Beautifully hand-drawn fairytale story about an old, childless bamboo cutter [James Caan] who finds a princess [Chloë Grace Moretz] in a magical bamboo stalk that is no bigger than the palm of his hand. Overjoyed, he takes it home, but when he shows it to his wife [Mary Steenburgen], the princess appears to have grown considerably. In no time she can walk and talk and play with the children in the neighborhood. When her father finds gold in a magical bamboo stalk, he decides to use it to give his adopted daughter a strict, royal upbringing to give her more chances in life and - he thinks - make her happier. Out of loyalty to her father, Kaguya does what is asked of her, but when she receives marriage offers from some prominent men, she is faced with a dilemma. Caan is a pleasant surprise in a light-hearted role and Steenburgen does a good job as the mother, but Moretz is less convincing. Given the simple story, the excessive length of this Oscar-nominated animated film is partly compensated by the moving songs and the beautiful music of Joe Hisaishi.

Disappointment for me on the average, although not entirely a disappointment because I already had the feeling that this is not my film. The animation style, for example, is very beautiful, but I think it is especially appropriate for short films and picture books, not for a full-length cartoon. The whole story itself didn't really fascinate me, and then the film also lasts over two hours. The film is certainly not bad and the film always maintains a certain level, but I just thought this was a boring thing. 2.5*.
