Meilin is a self-assured, drowsy thirteen-year-old who is torn by her dutiful nature to her overprotective mother and the chaos that comes with growing up. And as if changes in her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, she now suddenly turns into a giant red panda when she gets excited.

Pixar makes an Anime and unfortunately it doesn't turn out so well. But come on, they're trying out other styles anyway. Only they still stick too hard to clichés and their rather busy style. Turning Red is a coming-to-age and it looks like her mother is the evil in the story. Main character Mei is quite busy actually. The film tries some humor here and there, but a moment of real emotion never materializes. It all ripples along at a fast pace and doesn't surprise much. Pixar has (consciously or not) made the step from blockbusters to slightly more creative films, but is stuck in between with films that Disney dumps on streaming services.

Oh dear.
It is remarkable how a combination of Disney and Pixar in the year 2022, with so much progress in animation technology, can still turn out so poorly. The film seems to be much more popular abroad, but in the Netherlands it is not received too warmly. Only understandable, these kinds of movies are just plain annoying.
Disney makes another attempt to mix some cultures together and does it in its own way. Director Shi chooses to make each character as hyperactive and present as possible. Most of all, it's impossibly annoying. If the little girl doesn't get on your nerves, her mom will. It's amazing how annoying you can make your own characters. Sympathy was therefore nowhere present, while that is a very dependent factor.
Since that circus manages to keep itself upright throughout the film, it is almost 110 minutes of looking at a very loud family that just can't stop. It's a shame because it comes at the expense of a very successful animation. An animation with a very fast tempo and beautiful use of the colors. There isn't much variation in it, but based on that, the film could have easily achieved a pass.
The family nonsense continues until the final and then we are expected to recognize ourselves a little in these people. I can't hope so, can I? Yes, we all have a crazy side, but if that turns out to be anything like the characters in this film, I'll give up hope quickly. Let's hope Shi's next film is formulated a lot more normally instead of this nonsense.
