I think it's great how Hosoda manages to use a fantastic element like time travel here for an intimate story about that recognizable phase between youth and adulthood. That feeling of knowing that your life will change permanently, but at the same time you don't feel like letting go of things from your childhood completely. That inner conflict is made palpable here in a funny way by always enabling the main character to correct the mistakes she has made. She must learn that growing up is accepting that not everything will remain the same as before.

For me it's a small minus that it eventually focuses entirely on the glorification of childhood love as the absolute pinnacle of a human life. That gooey, sentimental cliché belongs more to cheap soap operas than to something where you can use a really cool concept like time travel.

Especially the first hour a very nice film, nicely rippling with a nice atmosphere and more coming of age than drama. The film hops from event to event and never gets bored like this. After that it all becomes a bit more mysterious and also just less fun.

That atmosphere in that first hour is also in the animation. Although the interiors often look a bit cheap (just like all those TV series on a Foxkids) and are not very detailed, the outdoor scenes are very beautiful. A bit sketchy (watercolor?) but with some detail that gives you an enchanting whole. Just then a baseball field with trees behind it and behind it some gallery flats give an enormous visual power that, because it is animated, also brings extra magic. I thought that sometimes the skylines were really beautiful. So sorry about the last half hour. 3.5*.
