dr. King Schultz [Christoph Waltz] is a bounty hunter who pretends to be a dentist. He has his sights set on brothers Ellis [Doc Duhame], Big John [MC Gainjey] and Lil Jay Brittle [Cooper Huckabee]. When he learns that slave Django [Jamie Foxx] knows the Brittle Brothers personally, he takes him over from his owners and makes an agreement: if Django (with a mute D) helps him identify these brothers, he gets his freedom and a share of the reward. And so begins an unconventional but lucrative partnership that offers Django the chance to deal with a dark chapter from his past. Although this is in fact an update of the Italian spaghetti westerns around Django, Tarantino won an Oscar for his screenplay, in which he greatly magnifies the proportions between white and black in the US without neglecting the dark sides. Flamboyant performances everywhere, but it was Waltz who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. That's Luke Duke (or Hazzard) Tom Wopat as US Marshall Gill Tatum and there are tons of cameos, including that Franco Nero who originally played the part of Django – and reprised that role after this movie!

Proposition 1: If the director's name had been Jeymes Samuel, then the film average would be at least half a point lower.

Statement 2: if Quentin Tarantino was listed as a director in The harder they fall, that print would score at least half a point higher on average.

Unprovable, of course, but this is my impression anyway. I found Django unchained entertaining, but less innovative or groundbreaking than I had hoped. It really lacked a 'wow' feeling. It's nice that Tarantino focuses on the western genre, but he uses his well-known repertoire: the self-confident protagonists, set against pure sadists, with a lot of blood and a lot of music. Also the whole revenge venture at the end actually lacks impact. The story is so-so, I thought the camerawork was okay but also not very distinctive. And then there is the length of the film, a whopping 165 minutes, which was unnecessary. Anyway, it never dies and the entertainment value is there, so I can only give it three stars. Edit: no, the feeling that lingers is not positive enough for a 3, I'll take half off.
