According to the opening credits, the film is based on the poem of the same name by the Australian bush poet Banjo Paterson. He himself returns in a small role in a scene at a train station in the bush. Figures such as Harrison and Clancy in this story come from other work by Banjo Paterson.

The story of The Man from Snowy River is not immediately sensational. After the death of his father, a young cowboy, Jim Craig, must gain the trust of Harrison, a wealthy ranch owner, as a jack of all trades. Jim Craig is supported by Clancy, a living legend in the Australian bush and by Spur, Harrison's brother. That trust is dented, because it seems as if Jim has let one of Harrison's horses escape. That horse has joined a wild herd.

A romance between Jim Craig and Harrison's daughter Jessica plays right through this. The middle section of the film in particular threatens to become rather predictable, partly due to the elaboration of that romance. The ending of the film, which includes the exceptionally well-filmed hunt for the herd of horses, is not entirely unexpected in terms of story.

In the composition of this film, the story seems to lag behind the attention paid to the images. Due to the good acting (indeed like Kirk Douglas's) and the various beautiful shots of the horses throughout The Man from Snowy River, on balance this results in a more than satisfactory performance.

Small 4* or spacious 3.5*.

According to the end credits, the film was shot in the Australian towns of Merrijig and Mansfield (and surroundings), in the Australian state of Victoria. Apparently an annual rodeo is still held in the first town.

Good film in which a young man goes to work on a ranch after the death of his father. Simply a western with a beautiful story. No shortage of beautiful pictures of the Australian landscape, sunsets and horses. Kirk Douglas is in his element here in an entertaining dual role. It could have been a bit rawer at times.

A really nice movie. It's more of a Disney-like family film than a typical western, but damn, this was compelling. You could say it's about the rise of a legendary rancher. After the death of his father, Jim goes to work for a wealthy horse breeder and cattle rancher. He is hardworking and liked, especially by his boss's daughter. Although Kirk Douglas' double role seems a bit strange, I certainly thought the young couple were excellent in their roles. There is some romance and this was not at all disappointing here, on the contrary. Those who love horse (movies) will also find something to their liking... the action scenes with the horses, especially the one at the end, are among the most beautifully filmed I have seen. The entire film is actually very beautifully shot. It's a shame that this remains so much under the radar. I definitely want to see the sequel.
