wow! Finally seen a cinematographic masterpiece. I have to say, I was a little apprehensive beforehand of the approach Nolan would take on this historic event: in the end, the 'Miracle of Dunkirk' was an ignominious defeat for the Allies and my fear was that 'Dunkirk' was some sort of revisionist dragon à la was going to be 'Apollo 13'. So the story is retold in such a (false) way that the final result is turned into a misplaced, patriotic victory. Nolan cleverly avoids this trap by focusing on an immersive, visceral, in-your-face spectacle. He deliberately skips the first two acts of a classic, narrative plot and suddenly turns to an all-crushing third act in which the sensory experience is central.

The critical comments I read here on this forum such as 'there is no emotional involvement', 'no character development', 'where is the blood' etc are all irrelevant here.

'Dunkirk' is an author's purely cinematic middle finger to Hollywood and the digital, Marvel-hungry YouTube, Netflix and iPhone generations. That this film was shot on 65mm pellets and is primarily intended for the IMAX theaters should ring a bell, right? Do you think a movie with extensive dialogue, and all kinds of character-developing scenes on such a gargantuan screen would only work a little bit? In any case, my hair stood straight on my arms, the senses in heightened alertness to behold this perfect fusion of form and content.

If Kubrick were still alive, he would have watched with approval.
