strong!

A bit surprising because I didn't really expect much from the review. But after a mediocre intro, the film really breaks loose. The first half hour is just a walk-in, after that the movie really starts.

I'm not a big fan of war movies, but Black Hawk Down mainly focuses on the intensity. Small streets, lots of people, lots of dust, sultry. And Scott puts his cameras right in the middle of the action. That does not make it clear, but it does make it extra oppressive.

Camera work is the biggest asset, soundtrack is not that special but okay, actors are also good but have little work. It's also not really about helping comrades and fellow soldiers, the focus is more on the action in the breadth.

Holds up well, even a second time. Wish there were more war movies like this.

4.0* and a extended review

Black Hawk Down is and remains one of the better to best war films I've seen. The street fights are so oppressive and a psychological breakdown that will have you on the edge of your seat. Just as the danger behind every tree or ditch drove the Americans mad during the Vietnam War, so are the door-to-door fighting in impoverished Mogadishu. It is not surprising that they did not want to deploy ground troops in Mosul, Homs or Aleppo today.

The unforeseen failed raid has become a staggering portrayal of a platoon of American soldiers pitted against an angry mob of thousands of Somali militia units. No heroic American spectacle with the usual fluttering Stars and Stripes. No superheros this time. No, ordinary boys who were forced and literally fighting for their lives when not one, but moments later also a second Black Hawk crashed. It is also striking that the team is a close team where no one is left behind, not even the dead... the moment of the pilot being captured is quite sentimental with the family photo presented, but it caught me. Luckily he later turned out to have survived.

The cast is huge and many actors are renowned, but it is not always clear who is who and where exactly. On the other hand, quite a plus in the chaos of the battle, including getting lost. The action is spectacular in the narrow streets of Mogadishu where those grenades, gunshots and clouds of dust are flying around you. Little real depth of the characters, but that I also not possible. Very nice set-up and atmosphere creation. A pure nightmare for those who end up in it. Very realistic and visually strong war film.
