Although we have often seen heroic battles against superior numbers, a film about WWI is something special.

During the course of the year we were reminded of this horror many times with documentaries and commemorations and in this "The Lost Battalion" the horror of that war is once again presented. In addition, the film in fact sharply denounces military government blunders that "only" led to "acceptable losses". Man as fodder for the enemy fire is once again underlined here.

"The Lost Battalion" is not a great war film, but it still impresses with convincing performances, although I did not immediately see a war hero in the character of Rick Schroder.

At first I was somewhat surprised to see a film about WWI in color, but I have to admit that the lack of white and black did not damage the impression of authenticity.

Thought this was a good movie. Good acting. Germans speak German. That's the way it is supposed to be.

A footnote in the history of the First World War - the film, however, makes it seem all-important for the further course - were it not for the fact that the famous pigeon Cher Ami received the famous Croix de Guerre for his actions and saved the lost battalion from the demise. A fairly accurate representation of the facts, although there are certainly some errors here and there.

The dense Argonnes forest was and is fairly inaccessible to motorized traffic, so it is not that obvious to track down such a battalion, let alone reach it. The fact that General Alexander arrives there at the end with his car, seems a bit drawn to me. Moreover, it is also not true that he would have given the order that they should attack if he knew that there was no longer any flank occupation of the French.

Always nice that the other party is also highlighted and, moreover, is not depicted as a gang of wild huns. Just think of that wailing soldier who wanted to keep his bread or the Major Prinz who didn't want needless bloodshed. In reality, his role was much more insignificant than is implied in the film. Also great to untangle the German language there.

More than a decent film, by the way, with the focus on the inexperienced Major Whittlesey, maybe a little too much, but fortunately he never becomes a one man show or super hero. Certainly belongs to one of the better films about WWI, they are not crowded anyway.
