The summer of 1978. Nacho Cañas, an introverted and somewhat unworldly student, is seventeen years old and lives in Girona. Every now and then films about youth gangs pop up. This coming-of-age film about a young man who gradually gets caught up in such a gang hardly distinguishes itself from what has been seen before in this area. Not good, but not bad either. A bit standard with a love story in the background that barely gets off the ground, despite the attractive Begoña Vargas.

I admit it, I actually only wanted to see this movie because of the beautiful Begoña Vargas. But the movie as a whole surprised me. It is not a simple coming-of-age story and about a gang that goes from streetwise to committing robberies and dragging the main character along with it. Of course it is also the story of being bullied, parents who are on your skin, wanting to belong somewhere and then there is also a beautiful girl who sees something in you. All that has its price. But it is also a story about camaraderie: one for all, all for one.

I was impressed. Because this story is timeless. A lot happens in this film. But indeed, halfway through the film sags a bit, only to pick itself up again. I thought the ending was strong. We get to look a few years ahead. That provides surprising images, a nice conclusion. And it was enjoyable to watch Begoña.
